Cataracts – Natural Approaches to an Age-Old Problem

Begin by protecting your eyes. UV light creates free radical reactions in the lens. Choose to wear sunglasses that filter 100% of the UV light and that wrap around to block as much light seepage as possible. The real base of nutritional protection is in antioxidants. Sadly, many of the anti-oxidant nutrients are oxygen-sensitive. Deal with sinus congestion quickly. There are excellent dietary and herbal ways to correct sinus issues. When the sinuses are congested they impede blood flow to parts of the eyes.

Use anti-oxidant supplements that include Vitamin A, beta-carotene, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. The concentration of vitamin C in the lens is the second highest of any organ in the body. Some sources report that vitamin C not only prevents cataracts but can also reverse them. Bioflavonoids, specifically quercetin and rutin, make vitamin C more potent. Nature’s Sunshine’s Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids has both of these bioflavonoids. Low levels of glutathione, an antioxidant that your body can make from the amino acids l-cysteine, l-glutamic acid, and glycine, have been found in most people with age-related cataracts. Other nutrients that support glutathione production are n-acetyl-cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, selenium, and zinc.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine age-related cataracts are disturbances in the wood (liver) and water (kidney) elements. Using TCM herbal blends like K-C (Chinese Kidney Activator) and BP-C (Chinese Blood Builder) together can clear the liver energy and strengthen the kidneys.

Lutein – Self Defense Against Blindness

As all of us age, we share many common experiences; one of which is deteriorating vision. One of the causes of this deteriorating vision is macular degeneration. This eye disease affects the mid part of the retina. There has been a recent serge in research on the problem probably because a great many of our population is approaching the age in life when we do not see as well as we did in the past. The lack of lutein in the diet may be a major cause of this problem.

Here in the United States the leading cause of severe loss of vision is macular degeneration in people over 65. This disease affects approximately 6% of the population between the ages of 76 and 75. There are over 16,000 cases reported each year and each year the number increases.

The occurrence of this problem is higher among white women and is not often found in people of color. Researchers have yet to determine the cause; although there is speculation among some scientists that exposure to sunlight and smoking contribute to the development of the disease.

Lutein helps protect the eyes from damage from blue light. This is because the macula is the area of the retina controlling central vision. It is the area most sensitive to blue light. Blue light is the part of the visible light spectrum that, along with ultraviolet light can damage the eye. This supplement protects the eye from damage by filtering blue light before it causes damage to the eye.

There has been research showing that there is a close relationship between lutein intake and pigmentation in the eye.

If you do not eat an adequate amount of foods containing lutein as you age you are risking blindness from macular degeneration. It is recommended by doctors that you have at least 6mg per day in order to maintain healthy eyes. The body does not produce it, therefore, you must replenish it constantly through the foods you eat. If you want to protect your vision in to your elderly years, it is important that you consume enough of this supplement to protect your eyes. Finding a vitamin that contains the recommended daily allowance will take some research, but will be well worth the effort. Multivitamins with more than an negligible amount of lutein are difficult to find, but with a little time and effort you can find one that will help you prevent blindness from macular degeneration.

The Importance of Sunglasses for Children

Sunglasses are considered by many to be a fun accessory; many adults even wear them as fashion statements. While sunglasses can be fun, they serve a very important role as well. Sunglasses protect your eyes! It is important to start children off right by insisting they wear sunglasses to protect their young eyes.

The Importance of Eye Examinations

Think back to the last time you had your eyes examined – how long ago was it? If you are like many Americans, it was likely over two years ago. For some reason, we understand that getting a yearly physical from our family doctor is a necessity but getting our eyes checked every one to two years by our ophthalmologist or optometrist tends to be ignored. Getting routine eye exams is just as important as your yearly physical! Who should get their eyes checked? Everyone.

Children should go for their first eye exam from an ophthalmologist as toddlers and, if all goes well, their next exam should be around kindergarten or first grade. Adults should have their eyes checked every one to two years – depending on when their eyeglasses prescription changes.

Kids with undiagnosed vision care problems may have a trouble with their school work but probably won’t know to vocalize their vision impairment, mostly because they are unaware that they aren’t seeing normally. Children’s eye exams play a vital role in their vision development as well as their academic achievement. Since vision is closely linked with the learning process, if your child has not received a full, comprehensive eye exam by the time they hit first grade, take then to an ophthalmologist for an eye exam.

During an eye exam, your doctor will likely look for refractive errors – like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Vision impairment has been known to cause car accidents, eye injuries, and could impair daily life – all because your vision hasn’t been checked for a new prescription in a while. To be on the safe side, make sure you see your eye doctor once every two years for an eye exam. If you notice your vision became a little fuzzy, don’t hesitate – go see your eye doctor.

Vision screenings are not a substitute for a proper eye exam. School nurses, pediatricians, and your local DMV may test your eyes in a quick vision screening but this is only done to see if you need a more comprehensive exam and it will not tell you if you need glasses. Only an optometrist or ophthalmologist can perform a comprehensive exam, give you a prescription for eye glasses or contact lenses, and fit you for a proper pair of eyeglasses frames.

Laser sight correction has become a safe and effective alternative to glasses or contact lenses for thousands of people. What is Lasik? It is a non-invasive, procedure which uses a beam of cool light to reshape the surface of the cornea, so that images will focus correctly on the retina at the back of the eyeball. The eye surgeon uses a computer to accurately calculate the precise amount of cornea removal for a given individual’s eyes. A pre-surgery exam is conducted and the eye surface is scanned and measured to obtain data which is fed into the computer which is used during the surgery.

How is it performed?
During the surgical procedure, thin steel blade is used to free a thin cellophane flap on the surface of the cornea, which is then pulled back to expose the under-layer of the cornea which receives the actual reshaping The laser, which is positioned into place, delivers a pre-programmed number of pulses of cool ultraviolet light onto the exposed under surface of the cornea. The pulses remove microscopic layers of cornea.
When the cornea has been reshaped, the thin cellophane flap is put back in place. It will adhere or re-attach to the cornea without the aid of sutures. The center of the cornea now has been altered to allow the incoming light rays to focus exactly on the retina so that images will be seen clearly. Most patients who receive this treatment notice a dramatic improvement in their vision immediately..
